What Goes Into a Patch
The stitching does all the work
An embroidered patch is a design stitched onto a base fabric, usually twill or felt, then cut out and finished with an iron-on, sew-on or hook-and-loop backing. The stitches cover the base, carry every detail and form the border that stops the edge from fraying.
This service is the patch file: the stitch file you or your production partner sew the patches from. That keeps you in control of the base fabric, the backing and how many you make. We digitize it for full coverage, a flat finish and a border that suits the way you cut.
Best for
- Uniform, club and team patches
- Motorcycle club and rocker patches
- Brand patches for caps, jackets and bags
- Scout, school and event badges
- Name patches and tags
- In-the-hoop felt patches
How We Digitize It
Patches that lie flat and stay sharp
Full coverage, a strong border and lettering sized to read at patch scale.
Full stitch coverage
Dense fills cover the base fabric completely, so no twill shows through and colours stay rich.
Dense satin borders
A wide satin border over an edge run seals the patch, ready for hot-knife, laser or scissor cutting.
A flat finish
Firm underlay and balanced density keep the patch flat, without curling at the edges.
In-the-hoop option
For in-the-hoop patches, the file includes a placement line and tack-down before the border, so the patch is finished in the hoop.
Lettering that reads
Names and mottos are sized and spaced for patch scale, so small text stays legible.
Any shape
Round, shield, rectangle, rocker or a custom contour: the border follows the shape you need.

FAQ
Patch digitizing questions
Is this the patch or the file?
The file: a stitch file for making the patch on an embroidery machine. You or your production partner stitch the patches, so you choose the fabric, the backing and how many you make.
Can you digitize a patch for a merrow border?
Yes. A merrowed edge is sewn on a separate merrow machine after the patch is stitched and cut, so we leave the satin border off. Tell us in your order instructions.
How much does patch digitizing cost?
Patch digitizing is priced by design size, measured on the longer side: up to 4″ is $10, up to 8″ is $25, up to 12″ is $35 and over 12″ is $40. Measure the longer side of the patch, including its border. See the pricing page for details.
What's the best base fabric for patches?
Twill is the classic choice for sharp, hard-wearing patches. Felt is softer and easy to cut, and popular for in-the-hoop patches. Tell us which you'll use and we'll tune the density and underlay for it.
